My Students

"No new textbooks next year." These were the words that we heard last year in our final staff meeting. I know the school will not be purchasing any new books this year, so would you help us buy a new set of novels?

My students live in a high poverty area of North Carolina.

For some reason, very few resources are allocated for reading and writing while the scores continue to miss the mark. The novels that we read are falling apart and are in need of constant care because purchasing new ones is out of the question.

My Project

We cannot afford to buy new books on our own; but my students need a class set of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and a few of its sequel Catching Fire. This is a great book about survival and identity. It is part of a trilogy which will give students the motivation to continue reading after the classroom instruction has ended.

It is not often that our students have the chance to use new books or read current best selling authors in class. Please consider donating and allowing our students to be exposed to The Hunger Games.
