Hands Up For Author Studies

My students need finger play puppets to match seven stories we do in author studies along with chart paper to write their own stories.

My Students

What was YOUR favorite book as a kid? My son listened to "Where the Wild Things Are" so many times that I can still recite it from memory - and he is now 25. The fact that he had a stuffed Wild Thing to hold while I read the story made it more relevant. Kids remember when they hold it in hand.

My students are that way with books by certain authors.

Jan Brett's "The Mitten" and "The Umbrella" are predictable - we know all the animals will head inside. Laura Numeroff has the same magic with "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" and "If You Give a Pig a Pancake". We know the animal will want one more thing many times. Eric Carl fosters repetition in "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" and "Brown Bear, Brown Bear". They drink in literature and are always looking for patterns. This public school class in a high need area like the same things that boys and girls all over the world like. They do better if they practice over and over but learn the best when the lessons and practices are hands-on. We all learn best by doing - just hearing isn't enough.

My Project

My students respond best to reading when it is relevant to them, interesting, and manipulative based. Having finger puppets to go with the books when we do author studies of will allow them to retell many times and then write to reflect their work. Research states that some things take 21 tries until they are internalized. I want my students to WANT to tell, retell, and retell again. Then they can write about it again and again as well. I will be able to tell the story using the finger puppets in large group. They will then use these independently in station time to tell and retell for their friends (thus reading the story each time) and finally writing about it during yet another station time. Students will tell character, setting, plot, beginning, middle, and end. They will practice sequence and writing as well. This project will give more time "on their hands" with the puppets and give each author study 3 times the power - teacher read aloud, student read, and student writing.

Students learn by doing.

This project will allow students to DO many different activities with the same stories. Author studies are popular but making the time count using puppets is just what boys and girls in First grade need most.
