My Students

The challenge that my students face is that they come from low economic income families and need small group instruction. However, with budget cuts this year, there will be no additional help in the room, so I am in need of learning centers that students can work with and gain extra practice in essential skills.

I am starting my 14th year of teaching first grade.

Even though the school year hasn't started, the students are "generally" the same every year. I typically have between 22-26 first graders. They come from low income families. Most students are very eager to learn, however they come to school with little or no structure. Having learning centers already prepared for the students would allow more time for me to work more with students.

My Project

I am requesting three sets of already made learning stations that are geared toward phonics and vocabulary development. I have 90 minutes to teach reading and having the students work in small groups is helpful to both the students and myself. The three sets of learning centers I am requesting would allow me to work in small groups while the other students are working in their learning station. With the students independently working and engaged at their center, I can be more focused on my small group. These items will make the students' lives better because they will continue getting extra review and practice of essential skills needed to learn to read.

This project is important because I can start the school year off with stations already made and ready to go.

I will start right away with implementing stations in order to allow me to work in small groups. Donations to this request will definitely make a difference. The students will be able to work independently or with a partner to review essential skills needed for reading. I will be able to stay focused on the small group I am working with and have little or no interruptions.
