My Students

Gone are the days of being able to count as the only math standard for kindergarten. Now a days, children must now learn the basic critical thinking skills they will use throughout their life. The only way for them to do so is through hands-on, meaningful exploration of these concepts.

Our school is considered to be a hub school for children with special needs.

In our classroom, we have 20 five and six year-olds with one teacher, no teacher's aide including students that have been place on Individualized Education Plans (IEP's). Our students come from all over; we have 4 different home languages in our classroom alone!

My Project

Research shows that children need concrete experiences with mathematical concepts before moving into the more difficult abstract problems. My students need this foundation. With these manipulatives, I will be able to set up math centers in the classroom. Not only will the students receive teacher led lessons, but they will be able to explore the concepts on their own. At a math center, a kinderkid is: • Increasing language and cognitive skills • Enhancing eye-hand coordination • Exercising fine motor muscles • Learning to estimate • Classifying and sorting • Counting and comparing • Recognizing patterns and shapes With these manipulatives, I will be able to set up math centers in the classroom. Not only will the students receive teacher led lessons, but they will be able to explore the concepts on their own.
