Make It Real! Pretend!

My students need a dollhouse and furniture to inspire cooperative play and lead them into new friendships on the first day of kindergarten.

My Students

"I think my class will have a doll house. I could play with my new friends with the doll house. We could all play together, girls and boys. I think that would be fun--I just can't wait for school!" Learning about their classmates through cooperative play is a natural for children to make friends.

I love to home visit my kindergarteners before elementary school begins.

Visiting these families provides me with an insight into their lives and eases their fears on the first day of school. We become comfortable with each other as I tell them about myself and they tell me all about who they are. Every year the children tell me what they hope kindergarten will be like, what they imagine will be inside their classroom. When I ask them what they wonder most about school, the children always say they wonder if the children in their class will like them and will they get to play? I typically have six to eight non-English speaking children in each of my two kindergarten sessions each year. Play is that common thread between all children. I learn many things about children when I observe them playing. I have a very academic Title 1 (Title 1 is schools with a large low-income student population) classroom. My motto is to LEAD, LOVE, and LEARN!

My Project

I envision children of varied ethnicity's communicating and cooperatively playing with a familiar setting in their lives--the home. This doll house will be large enough for many children to be engaged at one time. They will use this the very first day of school, free choice and small group learning center time. I would love to have four doll families: American, Mexican, African and Asian. This will help my children to learn characteristics of self and others (e.g., differences in gender, height, language, beliefs, and color of skin, eyes, hair). They will learn how to explain how people change over time (e.g., self, others). They will learn how to demonstrate respect for each individual, identify family members (i.e., immediate and extended), explain family rules and routines. Learn to Describe family members' duties and responsibilities within the family. Describe ways that families provide love, care, food, shelter, clothing, companionship, and protection.

Many times we assume children know basic social skills and everyday life skills that we as adults find appropriate and acceptable.

However, 5-year-old children are taught many of those in kindergarten--their first year of formal school. Through my project I hope to teach these critical life skills through play, beginning on the very first day of school!
