A Book Club of Book Worms

My students need 10 copies each of the books "Love That Dog," and "Hate That Cat" for poetry reading in our book club.

My Students

"Life is like an ocean As fast as it moves we move too" -Michelle 4th grade. Do you remember what inspired you to write as a child? The book "Love That Dog" inspired the author above! In a poetry book, SEEING the words is just as important as hearing them, which we can't do with only 1 class book!

My students are... Loving, inspiring, expected to be old beyond their years.

They are brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, and caregivers. They are happy, sometimes sad, they are comedians, and they are college-bound! My students are so many things that I wish could be communicated in words. My students challenge my EVERY DAY, their lives challenge me to be sympathetic even when I feel I have no patience left. My students are my life (the good, the great, and sometimes the bad) but they are mine. We have a saying at my school "We are climbing the mountain to college." These students might have never even set foot on a college campus but they know, without a shadow of a doubt that college is the ultimate goal. At the age of 9 these scholars have faced more challenges then I will probably face in my lifetime and yes, some days these experiences work against them, but they also make me love them even more. OH if only you could meet them!

My Project

"Love That Dog" is the story of Jack, his teacher, and poetry! At the beginning of the story, Jack hates poetry. He doesn't understand poems and even goes so far to say that poetry is for girls. Over the course of the book, he begins to find poems he enjoys and they soon turn in to his inspiration. Jack learns he can write about things he likes and that his poems are actually pretty good! "Hate That Cat" is the sequel and contains the same characters but Jack faces new challenges and new poems. With these materials my book club will be able to read together and follow the quirky unusual style of writing Jack has throughout the story. Poetry is so visual and to be able to have these poems in front of them will drastically change the experience my scholars have with this book and poetry in general. This book will make them laugh and show them that anyone can be a poet/writer!

It is my firm belief that no one can be exposed to too many different types of literature and so often poetry gets pushed aside because our scholars in the inner city are so far behind in reading.

With these books, I know we can build a class of book worms with a true love of words (and I suspect a few inspired writers as well!). As a lover of these books, I suggest anyone reading this, even if you can't contribute to this project, go out and buy these books for yourself, you will love them!
