Investigating the Role of Energy in Atomic Emission Spectra

My students need a set that includes spectrum tube power supply, spectrum gas tubes (He, H, Ne), and a spectroscope to investigate the role of energy in creating unique emission spectra.

My Students

The development of a nuclear model of the atom and an understanding of electron structure require that students recognize the role of energy in creating the line spectra emitted by atomic gases. Students learn that these observations led Bohr to conclude that electrons had discrete energy states.

Our students attend an Early College with a health sciences focus located in an urban setting.

The science curriculum consists of Earth Science in 9th grade and Biology and Chemistry in 10th. Students gain their remaining required science credits in college classes. It is important that they develop the necessary critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills by the end of 10th grade.

My Project

The spectrum tube power supply, spectrum tubes for atomic gases, and spectroscope will allow students to see first-hand that an input of energy is required to make atomic gases emit radiation. They will observe the difference between radiation emitted by heated solids and atomic gases. They will observe that while hot solids emit radiation in a continuous spectrum, heated gases emit only a specific portion of the electromagnetic spectrum.

The emission of a unique spectrum of light by each of the spectrum tubes will help students understand that the addition of energy via heating caused a change in the structure of matter.

Because the substances are atomic gases, this change cannot be accounted for by simple rearrangement of atoms in compounds, but must be at the atomic level. As a result, students will see the need for a more complex model of atomic structure, providing a basis for the Bohr model and quantum mechanical theory.
