Round the World Without a Globe

My students need safety glasses that we can use whenever a teachable moment arises, thermometers for experiments, and a classroom globe.

My Students

Help science be hands-on! I am taking over a classroom that has nothing but some test tubes and a whiteboard. Do you remember your middle school science experience? Help me turn their middle school science into adventures in learning with some basic supplies.

My seventh grade science classes will be a diverse group who love to try things out.

Seventh graders are full of energy and curiosity. This is a "magnet" public school in a depressed area with students who have high hopes for learning together with teachers who have high expectations. It's a wonderful school, but we have no funds for the science classrooms! My students would love to get their hands dirty and do complex science experiments, but without safety glasses, all I can do is have them watch videos - not cool at all. Science should be messy and full of mistakes. It's all part of learning and discovering the world around you.

My Project

The North Carolina seventh grade science curriculum starts with weather. I would love to use the globe and the thermometers to have the students run experiments on how the tilt of the earth contributes to the seasons. Later, there are some great experiments on water density and land versus water heat capacity that I would like the students to perform to help them understand fronts, currents, and ocean breezes. There is so much to learn but I can't do any experiments without safety glasses and we only have one set for the grade - that's one per 100 students! Thermometers can be used for both earth and later human body experiments plus I would like students to understand about conservation of energy flows - which again requires glasses and thermometers.

Think back to your science classes.

What do you remember the most? Was it the lecture, or making peanut brittle in chemistry class? I want to develop a love and appreciation for science in all of my students, but without the proper supplies, all I can offer are PowerPoint's. As a former scientist myself, I know that PowerPoint's do not capture the excitement of the chase for knowledge that well-planned, safe experiments do. Please help our budding scientists!
