Non-Fiction Needed

My students need non-fiction reading material that helps them use this genre's elements like titles, pictures, captions, charts/tables to understand what they have read.

My Students

When students enter third grade they become more interested in the world around them. While fictional stories still hold their interest, non-fiction reading materials becomes more important to their development as proficient readers. This genre allows them to learn about the world they live in.

Since it's summer, I have not yet met my new class.

Next school year I will be teaching third grade. I teach in a very unique school setting. My school is the only primary building in the district and houses kids from kindergarten to third grade. We are a large school with over 600 students. Our school is located in small town and there are 2000 students in our district. We are three minutes from the largest Interstate Freeway in our state. Additionally we are located just 20 miles from the second largest city in our state. These facts can bring some big city problems into our town and schools. Most of my students come from hard working rural families. The economy is relatively weak and we have 55% of our student body who qualify for free and reduced lunch. Access to a variety of reading material is a struggle due to funding issues.

My Project

This donation will have two profound impacts on the lives of my students. First, these resources will allow my students to become more proficient in reading non-fiction material. Students will become more confident in reading materials which include maps, charts, graphs, pictures and titles. Second, this donation will introduce kids to places and events that take place outside of their own community. For example, how will kids learn empathy for other people or animals if they don’t have access to reading materials that introduce them to current events that have happened recently like the earthquake in Haiti or the oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. These events awaken the natural curiosity young learners have about the world they live in. These reading materials not only answers questions students have about current events, but more importantly it helps stimulate questions students want to find answers to on Their own.

This donation will have a broad impact on students because most of the reading we do after we leave school is non-fiction.

Whether it’s a dinner menu, a road map, assembly instructions for a bike or government paperwork, students must be able to read non-fiction materials. This is why this will make a difference in the lives of my students.
