I Never Knew I Could Do That!

My students need a video camera to explore storytelling through the art of film making.

My Students

Nothing sparks learning like the ability to create. Too often in education we find ourselves relying on primitive tools to inspire children with modern minds. If we give a child the tools of technology there is no telling what they can create or become.

The students in my class come from diverse backgrounds.

Most are from single parent homes with low economic status. We are a Title I school which offers free and reduced meals to over 80% of our student body. Although these students come from very difficult home lives they understand the importance of education and are some of the hardest working children you'll ever meet. Their only exposure to technology is within the school system. Most do not own computers, or have cable T.V. As their teacher I feel a responsibility to show them not only what technology can do but how it can help them become better students and reach goals they never dreamed possible.

My Project

Last year I had designed an after school program in which students would be able to explore storytelling through creating, directing, filming, and editing their own films. This program would provide students who have broken homes a place to be once the school day has ended that provides safety and promotes learning through the creative process. Unfortunately a construction project at our school destroyed the hopes for implementing this program. During the construction process several workers stole many items throughout the school. One such item was the only video camera the school owned, and the central tool to the after school film making program. I believe that if we can obtain a new camera we can begin a program which will provide students who are surrounded with doubt and negativity a new self-perspective. They could see not only what can be done but what they can be, anything they want.

Imagine never having access to technology, never owning a computer, never surfing the web, or making a home movie of your family and friends.

How small would your world be? This donation will open up a whole new world of possibilities to a group of students who otherwise would never know their full potential. Something as simple as a video camera can give a child an experience that may change their life.
