My Students

"Practice what you know, and it will help to make clear what now you do not know," a quote from Rembrandt is one that motivates me to get sketchbooks for my students. Students who need to be able to sketch outside of class in order to see their full potential as they develop their artistic talent.

I teach in an urban PreK-8 school where my students are from diverse backgrounds and their families are in shelters and million dollar homes.

When they come together in the Art room, they are able to just focus on developing as an artist. Each year I discover students who have amazing talent and potential. When a student learns that their love of drawing is actually a talent, they seem to glow with enthusiasm and pride. With guidance and practice I can help them to have great opportunities with a local Art school in an after school program during elementary school or ultimately, I work to help them to develop a portfolio for their high school application.

My Project

A sketchbook is a key component for admission to an Art school, especially for my 8th graders who are preparing for high school. So many students have talent that has not been realized. Students have to be taught how to sketch and that it's okay to make mistakes because we learn from them instead of crossing or scribbling them out. I want to make sure that my students have the opportunity to keep a sketchbook to document their artistic growth so they may reach for their dreams. My students have the talent, I just want to help them to have the vehicle they need to get there.

With the purchase of sketchbooks more students who would not normally have opportunities to showcase their artistic growth in a prescribed manner will now be on equal footing.

Regardless of admission to an Art school or not, they will know they were able to put forth their best effort and they will have the confidence to continue with their artistic growth. This project has the power to influence the next generation of creative thinkers.
