My Students

Remember when you first learned to read? How exciting it was to put letters together to form words and learn about the world around you? Help my students experience that excitement as they learn to apply phonics rules and comprehension strategies while exploring their literary worlds.

My students, who are second-graders, come from varied backgrounds and countries.

They are eager to please, excited to learn new things, and love to give hugs. As with any public school, our students range from poverty-level to affluent, with most falling in the moderate income range.

My Project

With these materials in class, my students will be able to monitor their blossoming reading skills--without disturbing or distracting others--as they apply new phonics rules. I plan to assign one to each student to use during reading center work on phonics patterns, flashcards, spelling, stories, vocabulary, etc. I also plan to use them during our daily silent reading time. The devices will allow for all of the learning modalities (visual, auditory, and kinistetic) to be used simultaneously for reading success. With reading as the basis for all other subjects, getting the foundation at this young age will only improve their chances for success in the future.

The donation of a WhisperPhones class set will allow each student to have his/her own device to use during the school year.

I can then use the devices from year to year to help future students improve their reading skills and prepare them for academic success as well.
