My Students

Sometimes I feel as if technology is leaving my students behind in the dust! There are so many interesting, engaging tools out there, but we don't even have the basics.

My students come from a wide range of backgrounds.

We are a "traditional magnet school" that focuses on the basics, including the "other Rs": Respect and Responsibility. Our population includes children of parents with a higher education, and we are located in a high-poverty area of town, which includes children of parents with very little education. We have a wide variety of cultures at my school. We used to be headed by a private corporation (with none of the current staff), which left us out of a local bond issue 10 years ago. We did not get a technology upgrade at that time for that reason, but all of the other public schools in town did. We also lost our Title I funding 2 years later, losing out on other technological upgrades that other schools experienced, such as projectors and SMARTboards in every classroom. We share projectors and SMARTboards. I bought my own projector last year, but it died in April!

My Project

I will use a projector in class for every subject: grammar, geography and other social studies, writing, math lessons, science, Scholastic News, reading, language arts, and intervention time. I also intend to heavily use the SMARTboard and/or airliner (a large, interactive touchscreen) for every subject. I attended a conference this summer and learned many ways to use the SMARTboard and airliner in class, as well as many resources I can use to enhance learning with 21st century learners. The use of a SMARTboard to teach these fun and engaging lessons requires a projector.

Teaching without a projector in this technological age is challenging.

Much of our lessons and resources are electronic, and when I had a projector I transferred much of my hard copy files and overhead transparency lessons to electronic storage. I can't use those things without a projector. Having a projector in my classroom will greatly benefit the third grade. It will enhance engagement and interest and make use of the SMARTboard possible.
