My Students

TASS Titans, what a great basketball season! We have shown a huge improvement since last year and all with just 3 old basketballs! We rarely even get to practice our skills in physical education due to the lack of equipment...this project would be a great addition to our program!

I teach in a Title 1 school (Students who come from a low socioeconomic background and are not performing at grade-level) in NYC.

It is a middle school that shares space with an elementary school, including the gym. We have very little schedule flexibility and unfortunately, they only have physical education twice a week for 50 minutes. Most of our students do not have the opportunities to participate in sports outside of school. We provide what we can in physical education, but it is difficult with the lack of equipment and funds. I coach basketball and track for free and it often costs me money for uniforms and equipment. My students deserve every opportunity that students elsewhere receive!

My Project

My students love basketball, but definitely don't always have the skills to participate in a game setting. I would love to be able to do more skills development with them and lead into game play. Many of them would love to tryout for a Boys or Girls Club team and if we were able to practice the skills, they would feel more confident and perhaps tryout!

With the high dropout rate in NYC, middle school needs to be a place they feel safe and successful so when they get to high school they are prepared to succeed.
