Football Frenzy in NYC

My students need 4 kinds of football equipment in order to learn the basic skills of flag football and to progress into learning game strategies.

My Students

All city kids want to do is play basketball. FALSE! My students love football. I bought 3 cheap footballs in the beginning of the year, and by May they were playing with "the core" of the ball. All the rubber had worn off and the insides were falling all over the gym.

I teach in a Title 1 school (Students who come from a low socioeconomic background and are not performing at grade-level) in NYC.

It is a middle school that shares space with an elementary school, including the gym. We have very little schedule flexibility, and unfortunately they only have physical education twice a week for 50 minutes. Most of our students do not have the opportunities to participate in sports outside of school. We provide what we can in physical education, but it is difficult with the lack of equipment and funds. I coach basketball and track for free, and it often costs me money for uniforms and equipment. My students deserve every opportunity that students elsewhere receive!

My Project

I am so excited to begin the school year with a football unit! It is one of the students' favorite activities, and even as a mini-unit last year they loved it. I can't imagine the looks on their faces when they see we have a football for each of them to practice with a partner, and flag belts to play "real" games with! We will be able to develop passing skills, punting techniques, and game strategies, as well as compete in our district's football league!

Please help us provide a quality physical education program for our ever-so-deserving students!

Sometimes all it takes is one positive experience to keep our students coming to school. With the high dropout rate in NYC, middle school needs to be a place they feel safe and successful, so when they get to high school they are prepared to succeed.
