My Students

Trying to make students turn off their video games and pick up book is sometimes a lot like pulling out a tooth. But I've found that if the students can make a connection they will put the remote down and begin turning the pages.

My students come from families that place more importance on helping raise younger siblings than expanding their minds with a novel at home.

Sadly the reason for this is that many of the parents are not literate themselves. Breaking this cycle is difficult when I know my students, who are only 13 and 14, are going home to care for younger siblings, or working part-time jobs on the side. But yet there are some that are not going home at all, instead they are going to a group home because they have been removed removed from their own families for heart breaking reasons.

My Project

Students connect with 13 Reasons Why immediately. Last year, I read the book aloud to my teenage students and they begged to finish the book, and when we had to take a break for a week to complete other tasks, I watched my students argue over would borrow the book first and then complain when they didn't finish quick enough. The novel openly talks about teen issues like bullying, suicide, family crisis, popularity, and friendship in a very real and honest way that my students can understand. Half the battle to making a child read is teaching them that there are books out there they can relate to. That all books are not boring, which I hear frequently! I loved using this novel as a starting place for class discussions, and I've never seen students so eager to share their experiences and opinions!

There is nothing like watching a child that complains about opening a book every single day suddenly come to asking to read another book.

This novel appeals to my students and then provides an opportunity for more growth because now they are interested. For those some of those students that hate to read this novel can be described as a "gateway" book since it creates a desire for more words in their lives.
