Creating Reflective Writers with Writers' Notebooks

My students need 35 copies of "Writer's Notebook" by Ralph Fletcher to prepare them to keep their own notebooks in the coming school year.

My Students

"This is stupid. I can't write. I don't know what to write about!" These are some of the comments I hear from my 9th grade students when I assign their weekly journal entries. These 2-page journal entries do nothing more than instill a dislike for writing it my students. It's time for a change.

The students who will benefit from this project are those enrolled in Pre-AP English I.

These students are at the top of their class and many are gifted in language arts and reading. They are hard working, determined, and full of potential. Our school is part of the high school, but is dedicated exclusively to freshmen in hopes of making the transition from middle to high school more successful and less intimidating.

My Project

This summer I participated in the National Writing Project. One of the assignments was to read Ralph Fletcher's book and then keep a personal writer's notebook. After a few days of keeping my own notebook, I knew this was the solution to the monotonous journal entries. "A Writer's Notebook" teaches students how to think like writers. Events they once overlooked become beautiful poems, or gripping short stories. It gives students the tools they need to become life-long writers. Using Fletcher's book as a guide, one week I might assign students to listen intently to the dialogue around them and make notes in their notebooks. The next week they write down "cool" or unfamiliar words they hear. After a few weeks of gathering material, students will reflect on their writing and then compose an original piece based on their notes. This makes the writing meaningful to the student and ensures writing takes place throughout the week, not just the night before the assignment is due.

I want my students to become life-long writers and to savor words and language.

I long for them to write simply to write, not just to complete an assignment. This seems like a stretch for 9th grade students, but I am convinced writer's notebooks are the answer.
