My students need six MP3 players to use as a listening center during independent reading time.

My Students

Listening to reading is a crucial part of learning to read fluently and is also a huge factor in reading enjoyment. Many of my students do not have the opportunity to be read to at home and they love to listen to stories being read to them. These MP3 players will help them listen to quality stories.

My students live in a very rural community and many of them are economically disadvantaged.

In third grade I have found that students love to listen to stories being read to them and cannot get enough of our daily read aloud time. At this age students are eager to learn and to listen. They sit with their eyes wide open as I read to them from our various chapter books and they become hooked on new and interesting genres based on what we've read together in class. They are constantly inspiring me to find new things to inspire them on their reading journey.

My Project

I feel like adding six MP3 players to our independent reading time will be of immense value to my classroom. As I said my students love to be read to and by reading to them I can spark their interest in books they may not usually read. MP3 players can continue to spark their interest while I am working with small groups. Students will be able to use these during independent reading time so that they can listen to quality reading and to stories that they might not have otherwise chosen. By doing so they will also be learning how to read fluently and improving their comprehension. I can also use the MP3 players to record their reading and show how they have improved their fluency as well.

As I continue to teach students in the 21st century I am continually aware of how important it is to include technology in the classroom.

I feel like these MP3 players are relevant to my students' interests and capabilities and will enhance the instruction they receive during independent reading.
