Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Video games, movies, songs--there are many things my students would rather do than learn about current events! They need a way to make what's going on in the world understandable and interesting to them.

My students are Fifth graders in a public school and most love to learn if the information can be presented to them in an engaging way.

I love these kids! Most of my students don't have access to a newspaper at home, and relatively few use the Internet or TV to learn about current events. Some are quite poor, some are ELL. In this economy, some parents are out of jobs right now.

My Project

I would love to have weekly access to "Weekly Reader" which is a small "magazine" that comes on a regular basis. Each student will be able to have and keep their own copy. The magazine has current event articles, some current Science news, History lessons, maps etc. There are simple questions at the end for students to assess their own learning. There is more detailed information attached to a teacher's guide and there is a digital version that we can also access for video clips and more information. It makes non-fiction fun for them! I'm also requesting a pencil sharpener. That sounds so basic, but with our school's budget ever decreasing, last year I had NO pencil sharpener and was told we didn't have money for more. I bought multiple electric ones that wore out, and then I finally bought one that would hold up under overuse! Now I'd love to have a mechanical one so my kids can sharpen their colored pencils without ruining the electric one.

In my mind's eye I can see my students becoming informed citizens and learning to enjoy reading the news.

I've been able to get them to LOVE reading fiction, and I think the Weekly Readers will be the tool I need to get them to love to read non-fiction too. Thank you for caring enough about teachers to belong to Donors Choose. It warmed my heart to know that so many people are willing to help us. Thank you!!
