To Read or Not to Read: Adv. English to Read Hamlet!

My students need 50 copies of Hamlet for the Senior English unit on Shakespeare's plays.

My Students

The exposure of students to Shakespeare during high school English is very important for their understanding of literature. Hamlet, being one of Shakespeare's most well-known plays, paints an excellent portrait of the Bard's best work. Our current anthology does not include this selection.

My students are from rural Iowa and attend a K-12 school.

The addition of the advanced Senior English course is a testament to these students' sincere interest and curiosity for literature. In the past, seniors have read the version of Macbeth that is found in their anthologies; however, Hamlet offers a look into more advanced literary concepts that my students need in order to grow as scholars of English.

My Project

My students need 50 copies of Hamlet for the Senior English unit on Shakespeare's plays. The addition of Hamlet to our literature study would give my senior students the opportunity to expand their basis of knowledge in the area of Shakespeare's works. Because the themes in Hamlet are so easily related to students' lives, they will find meaning in their exploration of this text that will bring them further in their understanding of Shakespeare.

As a high school student, I recall that my reading of Hamlet was what helped me to decide to become an English major in college.

If my project is funded, my students will be given the chance to experience Shakespeare in what I hope will be a very meaningful way that encourages them to continue to explore the world of literature.
