Sharpening Reading Skills Through Current Events and Games

My students need 30 magazine subscriptions to Weekly Reader and Time for kids, along with reading games to motivate them to read in the new school year.

My Students

As teachers, we always encourage our students to read over the summer to become better readers at the start of the new school year. However, for many children they are not motivated enough to do so. Many of my students arrive back in September reading at the same level as the year before, or lower.

My students are all individually unique and learn at many different levels.

They attend a public school in New York. Many of my students lack the motivation and focus needed during instructional time. They need to be engaged with different styles and methods of teaching. I use many different types of visuals and manipulatives during instruction. When it comes to reading independently, many of them are not interested. Some read the words, but can't focus on the meaning of what they read. Others can comprehend, but they lack fluency and decoding of grade-level vocabulary. Many of these students need to be exposed to literature that is fun for them to read with topics that they enjoy learning about. Whatever genre it is that they are reading, they need to enjoy the reading, without thinking it is an actual chore to do. My students come from low-income families who cannot afford to subscribe to the magazines themselves, so they would appreciate the donation greatly.

My Project

Using Time For Kids and Weekly Reader in my classroom will become the root for my students to expand and grow on as readers. As a student myself in elementary school, I remember being so excited to walk in the classroom to find the magazine on my desk. As a struggling reader, I couldn't wait to read about current events and exciting stories. I wish to instill that excitement in my students as well. While we are reading about important events they will be exposed to new and important vocabulary. Reading skills will be sharpened, and reading strategies will be practiced as we stop to question things we have read. When we have completed the magazine, they will be encouraged to show their parents what they learned and read aloud topics they found most interesting. Along with the subscriptions, I am also requesting games that will be used to enhance reading skills and strategies during center time will also motivate my students to learn. Educational games play a major role in my students’ ability to focus and learn. They become engaged by the simple fact that it is a “game” not a worksheet or text book. They become competitive and develop the need to win, so they are focused on winning by doing their best. If they lose, they are driven even harder to win the next time! I

This school year, I wish for my students to enter my classroom with confidence.

I want them to know that they will learn a lot this year, but that they will have fun while doing so. These donations will help my students to achieve their reading goals throughout the year. The subscriptions and games will be used in various ways. They will be used in shared reading, guided reading groups, and centers. Ideas for extension and enrichment activities will be derived from these materials as well.
