No Child Left Behind Means Special Education Students Too

My students need high-interest low readability books, comfortable seating, highlighter strips and dry erase sheets.

My Students

Can you imagine what it would be like to be a high school student unable to read any of the books in your school? That is exactly what my students have faced year after year. Well this year all of that will change if you can help us start a brand new classroom library filled with seating and books.

My students are high school students ranging in age of 14-22 years old diagnosed with an Intellectual Disability formerly known as Mental Retardation.

Many of them read on a fifth grade level while comprehending on a second grade level. Despite their lack of reading and comprehension skills they work tirelessly to meet their IEP goals and improve their skills. Like most young adults they enjoy reading (when resources are available), writing short stories, listening to music and participating in Special Olympics. Since they attend a regular public high school where resources for them are often overlooked for students who will receive a diploma and take high stakes tests. As many schools districts are struggling to provide resources to students, ours is no different. However, because my students receive a certificate of completion rather than a diploma the situation is much dire, especially if you can not read or write proficiently. Help me, help these deserving most students.

My Project

The additional books will provide my students with high interest/low readability books that they not only will enjoy reading but they can identify with. These books will help keep them engaged and will increase their chances of continuing to read other types of books, thereby increasing their chances of becoming life-long readers. The new chairs will also provide them a comfortable place to sit and inspire them to read more. The new seats will also provide a more intimate setting when working in small group and during read aloud. For my students who struggle to stay focused the reading strips will help keep them on track by allowing them to focus on one line at a time. This will help increase their fluency and improve their comprehension skills and make reaching their IEP reading goals faster. The erasable white boards will also allow students to respond to questions at their own pace and allow me to easily access who may still be struggling.

This project is important to because these students deserve it.

For years they have become accustomed to minimal to no resources which sometimes impacts their desire to try. They have been neglected by stake holders for way too long and I can not sit back and watch it continue. These resources will let them know that people do care about them and their education and that advocacy works. I have often told them when one door closes you open another and that is what I am doing with your help.
