My Students

Are you as sick and tired of hearing "like", "you know", and "um" as I am? Students become less and less aware of their oral speaking skills as they use texting, emailing, and chatting as their main source of interaction. They need to be aware of what they say and how they say it!

My students attend our school because their parents chose a smaller school with a college focus for their children.

Even with parent involvement these kids are kids of the 21st Century, flaws and gifts included. They can use technology and adapt to it faster than I can, but they lack the skill of speaking in public. They have amazing things to say, they just need to learn how to say them and get others to listen.

My Project

With a digital camera students will be able to view their own speeches and analyze what they can do to improve. With technology involved they find it less like "learning" and more like "fun". They will be able to upload their videos and watch them, even save them to their own flashdrives for home use. With a lectern they will have a space that says it's time to give a speech, students will know to listen up, and they can find a way to stop fidgeting, or at least find an acceptable way to fidget behind the protection of a podium.

I have students from 8th-12th grade.

With these materials I can teach students over several years to improve their speaking skills so that when they reach college and beyond they are aware of what they say and how they say it. They will be empowered to speak in public, not terrified and anxious.
