Bring Language to Life for English Learners!

My students need an LCD projector which will help them access English across their 6+ languages through videos, presentations, images, and websites.

My Students

How do you best explain what it's like to be a migrant worker to a group of city kids, or what Fresno, CA looks like? How do you explain what a cockroach or a grape is in a language you know very little about? Easy: Show a picture! Play a video!

Teaching English learners in a city means there is little possibility you will be fluent in each of your students' languages.

Therefore, showing video clips, pictures, websites, and PowerPoint presentations becomes an essential part of instruction. Some of my students were born in the city where I teach, and some just came here last year. Some just started learning English a year or two ago, and some having been learning it their whole lives. My students come to me with a range of knowledge and skills - some have had many years of schooling, and some have low literacy in their home language. Many have parents or dear family members they have left behind in their home countries. I love teaching English learners because they are funny, smart, hard-working, creative, and cool. My students are soccer players, math whizzes, child carers, video game geniuses, singers, dancers, poets, cooks, computer experts, and community leaders.

My Project

This past year, I was lucky to share a classroom with a teacher who had an LCD projector. Whenever one of my students had a vocabulary question, I could instantly look up an image of the target word, and it would reverberate around the room in six languages. My favorite was when one student didn't know the meaning of garlic. I looked it up (and learned that garlic is "suan tou" in Cantonese), and we all had a brief (and humorous) debate about whether garlic is delicious or disgusting. Being able to bring my students together through the common language of imagery is extremely important in helping me build a community of learners. Many students are nervous about their English skills, and know little about one another's culture. Using images allows me to build a common body of knowledge in the class. LCD projectors allow me to show videos to help contextualize literature we are reading, such as a clip of migrant workers in the field or a documentary about Indian reservation conditions.

This past year, the LCD projector also allowed us to see how an experienced writer (me) creates a thesis statement, watch speeches by other students to prepare for our own, and use images to practice plot structure.

Being able to show images while I explain supports my instruction in limitless ways. Any way I can help my students learn and acquire more English will better empower them to reach academic success and personal goals and be positive contributors to their communities.
