Bookopoly Project

My students need an Elmo so that lesson introductions, independent and group work can be done efficiently, creatively, and imaginatively.

My Students

I remember the first time I used an Elmo. I wanted to show my third graders a dust storm picture from the depression. So I grabbed the book I was reading, and just placed the page on the Elmo. The picture showed up immediately and gave a vivid and solemn view of that era.

I will be teaching at two different schools during the next school year.

I've found that my students are good-natured, social, and thoughtful. There are three different grades involved, third-fifth, with the older students eager to share their experiences with the younger students. Both are public schools in a southwest region with many ELL or second language learners. Both schools have a moderate to high free or reduced lunch population and single family households. My kids are eager and excited to learn, find out new things, and ask questions. Sometimes it's a race to keep up with them, and that's what makes it so fun and a pleasure every day to educate them.

My Project

As a teacher, I present in a very visual manner using lots of color. Children need to see something real-time in this technologically advanced age. I would use an Elmo on a daily basis to present my initial lesson and to provide or add more examples. The majority of my students have computers and other electronic devices, but to be able to place a picture like the Great Pyramids of Gaza immediately before their eyes, captures their imagination and creativity. What's that saying? "A picture is worth a thousand words." I would be able to express in a picture, a drawing or a character or manipulative exactly what I'm desiring to get across. It would be a more learnable moment vs. a copy from a ten-twenty year old book or magazine. I can move the Elmo around and enlarge something to a traceable or drawable size. Or I can also leave it on, while my students work, so they can refer back to it and add their ideas and comments to a lesson or project.

I'm going to bring my students to the historic past.

The era of the Egyptians, Knights of the Round Table, and more. We will not only be doing research projects and reports, but my students will be presenting their projects, as in a fair, to other students and/or classes in the school. Whether one child or a group will be presenting, they will be able, with my assistance, to use the Elmo to provide timely, interesting and pertinent information. They can also use it to review their notes.
