My Students

"Learning through the arts reinforces critical academic skills in reading, language arts, and math, and provides students with the skills to creatively solve problems." -Michelle Obama In funding this project, you can help bring arts and crafts back into daily education.

As a fourth grade teacher in a high needs community in New York, I am always in search of creative ways to invest my students in what they are learning - especially when it comes to the dreaded Social Studies.

Social Studies is one of the most difficult subjects for my students to connect to. So few of them have any experience outside of their community, and, as a result, it is difficult for them to really understand what they are learning. For example, it is very hard to make historical concepts of self-sufficiency with regards to food, clothing, home, and hearth. This school year, we are going to be spending two month's worth of Social Studies lessons learning about Native Americans. In previous years, I felt that my students enjoyed learning about Native American myths and culture, but that they never really understood the way in which Native Americans had to create everything they had.

My Project

In order to develop this understanding in them, I would like to start off that unit by having students participating in a month-long art project. I want them to learn to weave their own small pieces of cloth! After learning about how Native Americans would acquire, dye, and create clothing, students will have the opportunity to construct their own small piece of cloth. Students will use cardboard looms and plastic guides to weave either plain or patterned pieces of cloth. Later, near the end of the unit, students will write an informative essay about the process. This essay, along with the cloth, will be on display for parents and peers on our bulletin board.

I did this project with my students last year, and it was such a success!

I sincerely believe that in order to invest students in Social Studies, it is necessary to get them excited about it first. What better way to do this then through arts and crafts? With your donation, you will enable my students to engage with material before it is explicitly taught, develop prior knowledge, and get excited about our Native American unit!
