Create a Sax Section for our 2010-2011 Jazz Orchestra!

My students need one alto saxophone to increase the size of the sax section in our jazz orchestra program!

My Students

We need more saxophones! I have more students interested in joining jazz orchestra than I have room for in the program, because of a lack of working instruments, including alto saxophones.

Most of my high-school students have never had a formal instrumental education, and many come from elementary and middle schools without music programs.

Does that mean they should be without a rich and rigorous music program whose challenges and rewards will not only prepare them for the rigors of college life, but will also present admissions boards with a well-rounded applicant? The students in my non-selective NY public college-prep high school are almost all from low-income backgrounds (we are a close to 100% free lunch school). In most cases, the prior knowledge of music literacy and instrument technique is absent, but the enthusiasm and passion with which my high school students tackle the job of learning an instrument more than makes up for the lack of previous experience.

My Project

We currently have eight enthusiastic saxophone players - unfortunately, my jazz orchestra program cannot accommodate more students interested in the sax until we get more high-quality instruments, such as the student model I am requesting. One more instrument opens the doors to one more student for one of the most rigorous, challenging, and potentially life-changing experiences one can have in high school: learning how to read music notation, play pretty notes on the sax, play creamy section parts and improvise hot solos in a swingin' jazz big band!

By funding this project to purchase an additional saxophone for the inventory of my jazz orchestra program, you will ensure that one more truly deserving high-school student is able to enter my program and learn to read music and play the sax.
