My Students

"I do not fear computers. I fear the lack of them," Isaac Asimov said and it mirrors my thoughts regarding my classroom exactly.

As a fourth-grade teacher in a low-income area of New York City, I am committed to closing the achievement gap in my classroom.

Within my classroom, a true culture of achievement and learning has developed. All of my students know what their academic goals are for the year, and they know just how to reach them - through hard work, hard work, and more hard work. Each day they come into the classroom and fill it with their joyful eagerness to learn more, know more, and understand more.

My Project

One of the greatest contributing factors to the achievement gap is access to technology. My students make do with what we have - a desktop from 2003, two semi-functional laptops, and irregular access to a computer lab - but it isn't enough. In the fourth grade, my students have little to no keyboarding skills, limited understanding of Microsoft Word, and a view that the Internet is primarily a place to game. If I am to close the achievement gap within my classroom, my students need to be technologically savvy. With personal computers for every student, the educational possibilities are so vast that the thought of it nearly gives me goosebumps. My students will write their monthly essays and reports on their laptops, create podcasts discussing colonial times, create PowerPoints explaining math concepts, participating in online games designed to build skills, designing websites for science...endless, endless opportunities to enhance traditional education with 21st century technology.

I dream of standing before my classroom, looking out at a sea of eager faces with an open laptop in front of each one of them, just waiting and wanting to learn more.

With these notebook computers, my students will begin to see education and the learning experience in a brand new light...and it is certain that they will carry this love of learning with them into fifth grade, middle school, and beyond. Thank you!
