Hope For Hispanic Students

My students need 40 copies of "Almost A Woman" by Esmeralda Santiago.

My Students

I teach in a high poverty school that has a high Hispanic population. We are a "school in need of academic improvement" within New York state. My kids are an awesome bunch of kids that learn in non-traditional ways.

Since my students learn in non-traditional ways, they need some not so traditional books.

A lot of them are Hispanic, but we do not have any books written about the Hispanic-American experience. They are expected to identify with a bunch of "dead white guys"; IE. Shakespeare, Thoreau and Chaucer. My kids need to gain an appreciation and love of reading, before they can even begin to get the classics. They need to read about their own experiences, before they can understand and appreciate the plight of others. My students need to read a memoir from a Hispanic-American author. Esmeralda Santiago writes about her experiences assimilating into the American way of life after coming from Puerto Rico. She talks about learning English and going to school. She talks about having to help raise her younger siblings. She talks about going to college and becoming a writer. She chronicles her struggles and triumphs, so that others can have hope.

My Project

I taught this book last year and the kids loved it. They loved it so much that many of them borrowed my books and never brought them back. I love when that happens! I love it when they find a book that they can relate to and appreciate so much that they have to “steal” it. I know my kids this year will have the same reaction and that is why I am asking for more of these books. My kids need hope. They need to read about someone who has come from poverty and strife, but who has made herself successful. I know that if they can read this book, they will gain a new appreciation not only for learning, but for their own culture. We talk about teaching the hidden rules and this book addresses them all. It talks about how home life rules are different than school life rules. And that is something that these kids need so desperately. They need to learn and appreciate learning, so that they do not drop out and become detriments to society.

With your help, these kids may have a successful future.

Some may even go on to college and further their education. You can give them hope and skills to use for the rest of their lives.
