Under the Lens: Bringing Life to the Classroom

My students need basic microscopes, owl pellets, and supplies to begin learning and understanding that life is everywhere and is an important part of every ecosystem.

My Students

Seeing the obvious in life is easy for my students. Family, friends, and pets are all around. However, to see and experience the tiniest creatures of life and their environment is crucial to developing a scientific eye for the details of life -- microscopes will be the bridge.

Wow!

Who are my students? They are the most incredible, inspiring bunch of kids I've ever known. They come from all walks of life, but they all have something in common. They are hungry for learning and understanding. They eagerly anticipate the days we "do something different" and absorb all the knowledge that they can. While our student body represents military families who have traveled worldwide and had many experiences, it also represents students who have never left our small town (or eaten at a McDonald's). Students thrive on learning about the "outside" world, and our kaleidoscope of student backgrounds allows that. Even though the majority of our students do come from low income families, every income level is represented. Our school strives to serve each and every student and is well known in our town for being "one of the best" for student achievement.

My Project

Last year I was able to borrow a microscope from the local high school for my students to use in the classroom. Each day students brought in items to "examine" under the microscope. Because we only had one microscope for our class, use was limited. I just completed a science class where I was exposed to using a prism microscope on a daily basis. I was hooked and knew that I needed to have this resource for my students. Students will be able to critically examine the miniature ecosystems of soil and water and will be able to examine farm land and estuary samples. They will see the value of life and how our daily activities impact the tiniest of creatures. My goal is for students to see close up details of these incredible ecosystems and then relate how these ecosystems impact their life and what they can do to continue to sustain them so they will be around forever. This activity will evolve into a greater understanding of the world as a whole and our obligation to its survival.

The oil leak in the Gulf has impacted the lives of millions of people.

Students today must know that their actions impact every aspect of life. From an ant crawling on a blade of grass to a bird covered with oil, we can make a difference. By giving students an opportunity to examine and learn about the fragile ecosystems in our environment, they can apply this knowledge to future studies and the overall picture of why we must do all we can to protect the ecosystems of our planet.
