Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students need to explore nonfiction titles. My library has slowly grown, but I do not have a wide variety of nonfiction titles. Seeing that I teach two reading classes during the day, the few nonfiction titles that I do have seem to disappear pretty quickly!

I teach at a title one school, so many of my students are not exposed to rich literature at home.

Many of my students love to hear me read, but when it comes to reading on their own, they are scared. They don't know what type of book to pick. Over the years, I have seen many of my students (especially the boys) acquire a love for nonfiction. This is why I would love to have the ability to offer my reluctant readers more of a variety of books to choose from.

My Project

These books will make a difference in the lives of several third graders! I have many children that just can't find that love for reading. With this project, my readers will have the option to read about a lonely dog in Iraq that was saved by a marine. They will read about how our local aquarium saved the life of an injured dolphin. Who wouldn't like to read about the lives of famous individuals like Harriet Tubman or Benjamin Franklin? And what boy wouldn't like to have the option to read about his favorite sport? With more exposure to a variety of books in the classroom, my students will have that opportunity to explore the world of reading and become successful, lifelong readers!

This project will help change the lives of our youth.

I hope that having more nonfiction books in my classroom helps my students to become better readers. It will give them more opportunity to choose what they like and it will help them to develop a love for reading!
