Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine having the world at your fingertips and not being able to hear a thing.

We have some of the best students in the nation.

They have a wide variety of personalities and many have hidden talents that we unlock throughout the year. Our school is 93% economically needy and 80% non-English speakers. Many parents came to this country to provide a better life for their children. The students come from a vast array of home lives. Many students tell me that school is a safe place where they can just relax. This is what we want to continue to provide for them. I do not want them feeling the financial burden of the school, something they are all too familiar with at home.

My Project

The students in the fifth grade are exuberant. They love technology and thrive on Internet-based material. Science is an important subject in fifth grade. We have Discovery Science where the students can have the lessons read to them and watch videos about the concepts we are learning in the classroom. By using the program, the students are able to see, read, and listen to new concepts while providing the background knowledge that was previously unavailable. In reading, we use the headphones to have stories read to students. In writing, we use a program called WYNN Reader that allows words to be read back and highlighted. These programs work wonders with our second language learners and students with reading and writing disabilities. My students will learn so much this year; from proper sentence structure to cell structures.

This request will make a huge impact on my classroom.

I could not imagine giving students a laptop and limiting their access because we cannot have every student using sound at the same time. These students deserve the earphones, and by seeing their community give to them will make them believe there is more than just their school that cares about them; there is a world surrounding them that believes in them and wants to help fulfill their dreams.
