Magazines to Inspire and Encourage Reading Strategies

My students need 25 high-interest, current event magazines to practice reading strategies and provide a variety of reading experiences.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Give real-world reading experience! Students in my classroom are anxious to learn, and would greatly benefit from the opportunity to read real-world, high-interest articles to practice literacy strategies. Magazines would provide much-needed variety to their opportunities to build reading skills.

The students in our classroom are a diverse group in a rapidly changing area of South Carolina.

Many work hard at literacy skills in the classroom, but are unable to practice these skills at home, as their families do not share English literacy. High-interest, intense instruction in the classroom is necessary for these enthusiastic learners to keep pace with their native-speaking counterparts. These students strive to please in many situations, educational and otherwise. Many work as hard in the classroom as they do in religious youth groups, with younger family members, or with athletic teams. They attend a public elementary school of approximately 900 students.

My Project

With the addition of Time for Kids subscriptions in our classroom, students will have exposure to a wider variety of reading resources. We currently have some leveled books within the genres of fantasy, nonfiction, and historical fiction, but a variety of learning paces and styles often makes applying new skills difficult with these texts. Students would benefit from a reading format more similar to the format to which most adults are exposed on a daily basis. They would also have opportunities to apply new reading skills to brief, high-interest text, thereby allowing more immediate assessment and intervention. Longer texts would still be available for comprehension, practice, and developing reading stamina, but strategy lessons could be applied directly to the articles in the Time for Kids magazines. By supplying two levels of magazines to the classroom, reading levels and skills can be differentiated to best meet the needs of a variety of learners.

Magazines in the classroom will not only inspire young readers by providing a variety of reading experiences, but will introduce literacy resources into homes where books and magazines are not often present.

After using the high-interest articles to improve their reading skills and strategies at school, students will have the opportunity to take their literacy skills home through consumable materials.
