My Students

Reading about scientists' ideas and dreams can inspire my students to realize their dreams.

My students are an economically and ethnically diverse group in an urban, public high school.

Our school has around 1250 students in grades 9 to 12. Students' interests are widespread in Athletics, Art, Music, JROTC, and Science, Math, and Engineering. Inspiring them to read, especially about Science, is a challenge. I believe they are eager to learn when news ways of instruction are used.

My Project

Literacy is a challenge in our school. This project will assist efforts in my classroom to cope with this challenge. The book of which I am requesting 30 copies is a well written and easy to understand historical account of the development of modern atomic theory from the late 1800s to the present time. The central character is Albert Einstein, but there are stories about many women and men who provided vital contributions to the dimensions of this theory. When my students read this book, the lives and dreams of these scientists will provide a setting to understanding a fairly abstract concept, the atom. In our Chemistry classes we do as many hands-on activities as possible to help students with their learning. I purchased a copy of this book for myself and with it a teacher's guide that has many suggestions for activities and discussions to go along with this study. I plan to use many of these activities.

Many of my students come from lives of poverty.

Sometimes I feel like a coach in motivating my students to give their best effort in my class. Our school is in a large, urban district where resources are difficult to acquire. When my students read this book, I hope it will inspire them to realize their dreams and ideas. Perhaps some of them will be inspired to pursue dreams in Science, Medicine, or Engineering and make those dreams a reality.
