Learning, Loving, and Embracing Change

My students need engaging literature, hands-on experiments to observe, a variety of experiences to help them examine, understand, and embrace change in their world and a digital camera to help them document it all.

My Students

Remember middle school? It's a tough place to be! Young adolescents are faced with constant change. My students come from different backgrounds so they need shared experiences to have common ground to discuss and learn about change.

My students are passionate for life and for learning.

Each student unique and incredible. They deserve the best opportunities I can provide them and I challenge myself everyday to meet their varied and important needs. My students come from different areas, speak different languages, like different books and shows, but they are some of the most compassionate individuals on the planet. I feel honored to have the opportunity to work with them and hopefully provide them with experiences that will open their minds and their hearts to the world and to each other. They are curious and interested in the world and simply the joy of having a terrarium to enjoy in the classroom would awe and inspire them.

My Project

I've developed centers around the concept of the inevitable nature of change. I have requested a butterfly kit where the students will be able to watch the transformation of caterpillars to butterflies. As the kids are experiencing dramatic physical changes in their own lives, they will be able to watch as their caterpillars go through a change and come out vibrant and healthy. I've also requested novels such as Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie and Hatchet where the protagonist overcomes huge obstacles and are changed for the better as a result. Finally, I've requested a camera so they can document change through the art of photography. Whether it's a changing environment or person, I hope to inspire my students. The resources I've requested would open doors to the imagination of what is possible. By relating to characters in literature, watching the development of nature, and documenting and discussing change, students can bond with their peers and mature within themselves.

I passionately believe in my students.

They are going to be the agents of change in the world, and I will do everything in my power to help them grow as people and as students. I designed the unit on change to excite their minds and hearts! Any help in my quest would be incredibly appreciated; I guarantee it will help to change the life of a child.
