This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember when you were in school how the classic books helped you reflect on the ideals and ethics you hold true. My students have yet to experience this experience.

The students in my class come from low-income homes and 98% are English language learners, the students suffer from a lack of quality reading material to engage their minds.

The students often feel bored when reading the school curriculum and need to be engaged more in material that relates to them.

My Project

I have requested a class sets of classic books (20-25 each title): Huckleberry Finn, Of Mice and Men, Lord of the Flies, and To Kill a Mockingbird. The students in my class have not been introduced to classic literature. The basal reading books they use now have trouble gaining their interest. Students at any age need to be engaged in classic literature that resonates themes that can that relate to their lives. These books contain central themes that relate to students on a personal level and have the ability to allow students to critical think about morals, ethics and ideals that will make them who they are.

This request will help introduce younger students to classic literature that contains themes and ideas that can relate to the students lives at any age.

Students are bounded only by the limits the teacher puts on them. If I assume my students will read at a low level they will read at a low level if I believe they read at a high level and carefully guide them through the books they reach higher achievement levels.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
