How Clean Is Our Water?

My students need a Qualitative Introduction to Water Pollution Kit and a LaMotte Leaf Pack Experiments Stream Ecology Kit.

Ms. Gaul South Granville High School
Creedmoor, NC Grades 9-12

My Students

My students, who range in age from ninth through twelfth grade, take water for granted. I teach high school science in a small, poor, rural county in North Carolina. Even though their lives and their families' livelihoods depend on water they are clueless about its fragility and stewardship.

As often as three times in a year there are notices posted at the school water fountains informing the public that the water treatment plant has failed to meet some federal drinking water standard.

When the kids ask what that means, all I can do is explain it and show them lists of chemicals tested for and what the guidelines are. I can't show them how sampling is done, how tests are performed, what is good testing procedure and what isn't, or the experience of actual field work. I know that some of what I describe to them 'goes in'. But with literally NO money from the county to spend on science supplies for the last three years, there is no way we can provide the opportunity for these kids to internalize the importance of watershed and water-supply protection. They are lucky to live in a place where there is abundant water but they need to learn about the dangers facing our water resources and how to detect those dangers.

My Project

We need a water pollution sampling kit and a stream sampling kit. With this equipment the students can test the streams emptying into the water supply lake, the lake itself and the tap water. They can follow the path of pollutants downstream to the kitchen table or upstream to the source. They can learn so much about the fragility of the groundwater supply and the environment that both generates and protects it. They can become informed citizens and consumers. Using the stream sampling kit they will see what macroinvertebrates live in the stream. They will learn that the types of macroinvertebrates they find indicate the health of the stream. Your help will make it possible for my students to learn why water stewardship is vital in our communities.

Without your support this project cannot take place.

There are no funds to purchase these resources. But with your kind donation my students will become the stewards of our environment that we want them to be.
