Shake It Up!

My students need 5 tambourines to replace old tambourines with ripped heads and rusty jingles.

My Students

There is something about playing a tambourine that just makes you want to move! Children can shake it, tap it with their hand, or hit it on their hip and just have so much fun making their own music. Adding 5 new tambourines would mean that every child could have an instrument to play.

I am the music teacher for 450 students in grades k-5.

Even though we are in a small town, this past year I had students from 22 different countries, just in my fifth grade classes! Because of this, I use a lot of multicultural music with my students. Approximately 40% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch, and we have an increasing homeless population. In addition, we have the largest ESL (English Second Language) population in our school division. For these students, their weekly music class is the only time they have access to playing a "real" instrument. I am trying to ensure, with this grant proposal, that every child has a quality instrument to use in music class.

My Project

The tambourine is an instrument that can be used in all grade levels. In my youngest classes, we use tambourines to keep a steady beat while moving. I use tambourines to illustrate the difference between playing a steady beat and the rhythm (the way the words go), in a song. When it comes to the oldest grade levels, the tambourine can be used in an ethnic dance from Italy, such as the tarantella, or from Israel, such as Haida. Playing a tambourine while moving or dancing often helps relieve a student's initial self-consciousness, because they get caught up in the excitement of dancing with an instrument. I do have some tambourines in my music classroom, but at least one third of them are in very poor shape. Some originally had "heads" but over time, the heads have become punctured or torn. Some are missing jingles, where a nail has come loose, causing the jingles to fall off the instrument, and some of the jingles are rusty.

I use a lot of multicultural music and multicultural dances in my music classroom.

It would be so exciting if I had enough tambourines so that an entire class would be able to participate all at one time, instead of having to dance with a tambourine in "shifts." For my older boy students, who are starting to think that dancing is not a "cool" thing, giving them a tambourine takes their mind off of the actual dance and gives them a freedom to enjoy moving with the music.
