Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students LOVE to read! They also love to act, draw, and create! One way they do that is through our reader's theater shows. Now, I want them to not only be the actors, but to also be the directors, script writers, set designer, and editors of their own personal stories helping them to come alive!
My students are a bright bunch of kids who love school and learning.
They are a caring group who have such distinct and unique personalities. I've got soccer stars, an actress who's booked commercials, a student obsessed with cats, a fashionista, an old soul trapped in an 8 year old body, cheerleaders, wrestling die hards, Chipmunk lovers, teacher's pets, Mohawk brigades, and the whisperer. Regardless of their personalities, they ALL love to use their imaginations and enjoy creating things unique to themselves.
Our school is a Title 1 school, in a low socio-economic area in one of the most crime ridden cities in CA. 100% of our students qualify for free lunch. A majority of the parents of our students have never gotten a college degree.
My Project
Having multiple video cameras in our classroom will help to unleash a level of creativity and technology that is rarely seen in a school due to limited resources. These video cameras will better my students' lives by allowing them the opportunity to create their own stories, write them, draw them, and act in them. Through the use of the cameras, students will decide what element of the images they want to focus on, making them really think about their stories and what is important to them. They'll be able to choose what music they want accompanying their movies, helping them to create the mood. Scary music for a suspense movie, or whimsical for a fairy tale. My students will learn the importance of a plot in a story as well as learn how to incorporate the arts into their lives through their scenery and acting. They'll be able to watch their own performances which add another element to their learning--the element of reflection.
