Battling With Coordinate Grids

My students need 12 copies of the game "Battleship" to help them understand coordinate grids.

My Students

Do you remember playing board games when you were a kid? We learned many important math skills and life lessons while playing those games, and we didn't even realize we were learning in the process.

I teach the fourth grade in a rural Arkansas school and we are currently at 74% free and reduce lunches.

We are a rural district and most of my students live out in the country on dirt roads. Most of my students live out in the country and they don’t have neighborhood kids to play with, so they don't have as many opportunities to challenge someone to a board game.

My Project

"Battleship" is not only an exciting game of strategy, but it is an excellent way for students to understand coordinate grids. Through using this game, my students will be able to name the coordinates of a point on a coordinate grid and plot a point on the grid when given the coordinates.

Your help will not only teach my students about coordinate grids, it will teach them about good sportsmanship.

Many kids today don't get an opportunity to play games and experience what it is like to lose. Kids are sheltered from disappointment and they are missing out on a life lesson. School is no longer a place to sit and listen, it’s a hands on, get in there and give it a try place. We need to provide our students with all the tools and experiences they need.
