Twilight, Eclipse, and New Moon for First Graders

My students need folder games, classification centers, photo library, books and an organizer cart.

Mrs. Owens Snacks Crossing Elementary School
Indianapolis, IN Grades PreK-2

My Students

When you read the title you immediately thought of vampires and werewolves, didn't you? That's the power of just five words- twilight, eclipse, and new moon. There are many REAL science concepts which can be taught in reading like nocturnal animals, phases of the moon, and animal characteristics.

The majority of my 25 public school children are qualified for free lunch and they run the gamut of abilities from low to high but they are all excited about science subjects.

They love reading AND being read to, but they also enjoy looking up facts in books and doing research on their computers with their fifth grade research buddies. Whether children are rich or poor, rural or urban, they all love animals and space!

My Project

My students need books, science activities, and a place to organize. This includes folder games, classification centers, photo library, books, and an organizer cart. These activities merge reading and writing with science. They also allow for hands on games and activities to follow up the reading and creative writing to follow the inquiry. I will be able to teach small groups about nocturnal animals and moon phases in guided reading while other groups of students explore science concepts independently with science folder games, animal classification centers, and creative writing with photographs. Students will rotate through the teacher guided instruction and learning stations so that all students get an opportunity to participate in four different activities which can be modified to their individual reading level.

This is so important now for students.

Test scores seem to have become the reason for teaching instead of the evaluation of student achievement. Schools are required to have certain scores and are penalized if they do not meet these. Result? Emphasis on the test skills and a decrease in science instruction. This allows integration of science with reading- instructional time does double duty. Children learn more with subjects which hold their interest and these are areas first graders love.
