My Students

Abraham Lincoln once said, "The things I want to know are in books. My best friend is the man who'll get me a book I [haven't] read." My students will benefit with more books that are in my classroom. A classroom library is vital to the success of my students!

My students attend a school that is within a military community.

Students in second grade are young enough to change perceptions about reading. Having the materials at their fingertips is the first step to making reading more fun! I truly believe that many parents from my school want reading to be important in their child's life, but many do not know how to go about making it a priority. Providing students with different reading material may help break this barrier for students within my classroom and therefore helping parents at home.

My Project

I am requesting poetry and nonfiction reading material. These materials are lacking in my current classroom. These two types of literature are vital to the overall success of students in my classroom. Students are very comfortable with reading fiction (make-believe) stories. In a primary classroom, most of the reading curriculum focuses on fiction stories. If students are not that interested in reading make-believe stories, they very quickly are turned off by reading. Having other types of literature in my classroom may help some of the most difficult students who dislike reading find a love for it. These texts will be used during my book talks, which is a time where I talk up books to motivate students to read. In addition, I will use the nonfiction text during science lessons. The poetry that I choose will be used during reading centers and during writing.

The addition of these resources in my classroom will help students have a love for reading.

These resources will help me motivate my students! "There are many little ways to enlarge your child's world. Love of books is the best of all." — Jacqueline Kennedy
