My Students

Can't sit still for long periods? Neither can I, so why do we challenge eleven year olds to do this all day? Encourage fitness in all classrooms, not just the gym.

Our South Carolina school is seeing an increase in overweight or obese students.

Our school nurse and guidance counselors report that they see have noticed an increase over the years of students suffering from sleep apnea, low self-esteem, asthma, Type 2 diabetes, and depression. There is a connection between the obesity and these ailments.

My Project

Reports indicate that student attentiveness and participation increases with the use of exercise balls in the classroom. I want an outlet for students who need to release bottled energy or for the students that can not seem to wake up. Doctors say balancing on an exercise ball requires greater focus and promotes the flow of blood and oxygen in the body, which leads to increased brain stimulation and helps students stay alert. I will allow students to take a break in the hallway and jump rope when needed. I want my students to change their thoughts about being physically active during the day. I want them to make healthy decisions.

Please help me to make this change of thought processes at my school. I've started a school garden to promote healthy eating habits and want to continue making little changes that encompasses the whole lifestyle of our students.
