Alleviate Historic Aliteracy!

My Students

One of the biggest problems I see in the classroom today is aliteracy. I have students who are proficient readers, but who choose, for various reasons, not to read. A colleague recommended Just Jane as an excellent means of making history relevant and exciting for our students.

My school's population is a microcosm of society, with all of its attendant issues and opportunities.

My school serves a variety of neighborhoods, ranging from federally subsidized apartment complexes to upper middle-class homes. The student population is racially and culturally diverse. This presents an opportunity to bridge societal gaps that aren't as pronounced in a more homogeneous setting. Because we study South Carolina history, it is often difficult to maintain an objective distance from the subject matter. The saying, "We don't see things as they are, we see things as we are" is the guiding principle of instruction and discussion throughout the year. Often, students enter my class completely unwilling to discuss history. Over time, students begin to understand that even if history does not appear to impact them directly, if it impacts those with whom they interact, it does impact them. I firmly believe that students leave my classroom better equipped for society.

My Project

It is my fervent hope that my students, no matter their background, come out of class with a better understanding that the past is never past and that sadly, while we have progressed tremendously throughout history, mankind has witnessed enormous setbacks at various times. I am often puzzled as to why students view history as such a dry and uninspiring subject, because to me, it is fascinating to dissect the foibles and treachery of mankind as well as to marvel at accomplishments. I think that once my students understand that everyone has feet of clay, they see that they too have the potential to make an impact on the world. Just Jane will serve the twin goals of making history relevant to my students and, hopefully, nudging them toward the path of being lifelong readers. A line about education from Frank McCourt's biography sums up its value more than my tepid prose ever could: "You might be poor, your shoes might be broken, but your mind is a palace."

One of the most valuable skills students can learn is how to become a productive member of society.

Making history relevant through the use of this novel study is critical in achieving the objective of building empathy in my students. History is completely meaningless unless students understand that, as Camus wrote, "we are in the soup together."
