This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Help us better understand the complex world of Earth Science. Let us get behind the camera and show you what we have to offer.

My students are a great group of about 100 eighth grade students that attend a combined Junior High/High School in Nevada.

They live in a community that has a low socio-economic status and the school population is about 80% Hispanic students. A lot of the students tend to dropout of school to work at the local casinos. We want to see more and more of them graduate and move onto bigger and better things.

My Project

Our first unit of study will be lab safety. Normally we just give a demonstration on all the lab procedures. With the addition of FlipCams, the students will be assigned a specific lab safety procedure. They will then create their own Lab Safety Video. These will then be posted on our website for other students to watch. The next unit of study will be our weather unit. We always kick it off with the formation of clouds. Last year we did a demonstration and explained the processes on how a cloud forms. Again, with the camera, students will become the instructors. They will create their own cloud demonstration, but more important they will describe what is going on. The biggest reason for the FlipCams is they will allow the students to become more involved in their learning. They will take more ownership in something they create, versus watching their teacher do a demonstration. I am really excited to see what my students can produce.

We have two goals in mind: 1) Increase the students' knowledge of technology; 2) Allow them to discover scientific concepts, thus creating a deeper understanding of the material.
