My Students

My students are 12th graders. They are in my special education English class because of a mild learning or cognitive disability. The book of poetry by Tupac Shakur is very easy to read, and at the same time, incredibly intense and easy to relate to.

These students are great.

They don't love reading, but they know when they are in my class...they have no choice! They most likely don't like reading for 2 reasons... first they find it to be very difficult because of their disability, and second, because most of the time, they are reading some boring textbook in all of their classes. I make sure I find interesting books for them, about real-life issues, and books that are written with African-American teens in mind.

My Project

The book titled "The Rose That Grew From Concrete", by Tupac Shakur is simply a book of poems that he wrote throughout his life. You and I could pick this book up and read it quickly in a day or two, no problem. In class though, I plan to spend a few weeks to a month, and creating a unit to teach the underlying meaning in each of these poems. This way, they are reading everyday, and learning about some of the struggles that people share. Many people think of violence when they think of Tupac, but if I can show these students how educated this man was, maybe they can open their minds a little more.

All seniors in high school need to be motivated to read.

But, seniors that have a learning disability not only need to be motivated with an interesting topic, but need to be successful. This book is great to read, study, understand, and discuss, even for lower reading levels. They can easily be successful in reading this book, and gain the confidence to keep on reading throughout life!
