My Students

My kindergarten class is in a high need community. Our school serves a high concentration of ELL and special education students. They come to school with very limited early literacy experiences. Some of my students tell me they don't even have a single children's book in their homes.

Most of my students have not attended a quality preschool or had any early literacy experiences to help them be ready for school.

Students who are not reading on grade level by the end of third grade are not likely to finish high school. These students are years behind some of their peers. We have a few short years to try to catch these student up with peers who are from more affluent backgrounds. Helping them master the literacy skills necessary to read before the end of third grade is a battle we fight every day. The clock is ticking and we desperately need your help.

My Project

I need a Getting Ready to Read Activity Carpet to take my class on a magic capet ride that will lead them to learning letters and sounds that are the foundation of our language. Your help will assure that my students have a chance to catch up on these basic skills through fun and engaging activities. Many times when I am reading books aloud to the students they can't always see the pictures. This reading carpet would allow the students to get up close and personal with quality children's books through shared reading experiences. As I said, some of the children don't have any books at home or an adult reader to read to them. I have the opportunity to lay a foundation that should have been started right after the child was born. Children born into poverty don't have the luxury of books and early learning materials. Parents in poverty use their resources to keep the lights on and a roof over their child's head.

We have a small window of opportunity to reach these children.
