Stop Motion Movie Madness

My students need a camera, tripod, and memory card to make their stop motion animated films in art class.

My Students

Book learning cannot compare to the excitement of making your own Stop Motion Animation. Use simple tools like a camera, tripod, paper and crayons. Add patience, imagination and hundreds of photographs and the result is a stunning under 30 second movie. Oh, and did I tell you the topic is educational?

We are a Year-Round elementary school in North Carolina.

Our enrollment is well over 600 students and each of these energetic children come into my art room every week. We love making and watching our movies. One of the benefits to seeing children for several years is developing a program that builds with the child's interests and abilities. Beginning with the youngest children who see their pictures put into movie sequences with music or recorded voices. Second grade students learn the process of stop motion animation as they move their handmade insects to song. Our older students work in teams to plan, write story boards, then create the background and objects for their films. Fifth grade students learn to add voices into their movies and add special effects. By the time these students move on to Middle School, they will understand how technology can be a powerful tool for learning.

My Project

Students work in small groups to write and produce a short animated movie. The topic can range from science, history, and literature. With every film, students use writing and drawing skills. They use math as they count frames and estimate distance. They take one picture move their handmade object one inch. Then they take another picture. Hundreds of pictures later they have a movie. But the best part of the process is watching our class film festival when each group shares their efforts with other groups. Watching the pride as students sit with tall straight backs, wide open eyes and great big grins as other students giggle and clap. It is not uncommon for students to call out "Hey, that's my work!" As we finish our annual movie unit many students will say that they are already planning their project for NEXT school year. It is exciting to hear students eager to come to school. Who says that learning shouldn't be fun?

Your help to fund this project will allow us to have a second filming station in the art room, which includes another camera, tripod and memory card.

Students will not feel rushed to finish their segment and pass to the next group. More students can get involved with the camera work and we can make LONGER movies! With a large collection of rechargeable batteries we can spend years making movies about insects, space stations, animals, geography, history, literature and just about any subject covered by school curriculum! Please help my students create!
