My Students

How do you reinforce effort and provide recognition to Kindergarten writers? I would like for my Kindergarten scholars to be able to view their writing and illustrations enlarged and projected for the entire class.

Our Blue Ribbon school emphasizes depth and complexity in every aspect of the curriculum.

We refer to all of our students as scholars. This means, to me, that their goal is more than making good grades and pleasing teachers. We are endeavoring to construct an understanding of the world based on inquiry, hands-on exploration, and continuous reflection. In my Kindergarten class we write every day. Some scholars enjoy writing immediately. Others need more reinforcement and feedback. Most enjoy sharing their writing.

My Project

I am requesting a document camera for my Kindergarten classroom. The primary use will be during the sharing portion of my scholars' writing workshop. Writers will be able to place writing and illustrations under the camera and see their stories enlarged and displayed on the screen. Writers will be able to read their stories aloud, while classmates follow along. After sharing, during the feedback, reinforcement, and mini-lesson, I will be able to clearly show correct spelling, spacing, capitalization, and punctuation. I also plan to use the document camera to transform standard-sized books into virtual big books. The entire class will be able to more clearly identify details in illustrations and spot vocabulary words, as well as read along during shared readings. I can maximize the efficient use of the document camera by sharing it with the other 3 Kindergarten teachers because we do not all do Writers Workshop at the same time.

Our struggles during Writers Workshop have been to keep all scholars engaged and to be able to use the scholars' authentic writing to effectively provide feedback to the writer, as well as use the writing as a foundation of a mini-lesson for all scholars.

Not only will the document camera enable us all to access the writing in a more useful form, but also will provide the writer the positive reinforcement of seeing his/her writing displayed in a "professional" manner.
