My district is in a financial crisis with the GM plants and suppliers leaving, and we will not be able to order any supplies this year. The children are the ones that lose and I am hoping to get as many science and math items into their hands as possible.
My children are 2nd graders that are living in low-income housing and rental homes.
Most of my parents are not working and do not have transportation. The safe haven is at school where they receive a breakfast, lunch, and after school snack. All of their success comes from the classroom. Education is not important in their family, just shelter and food on the table are a priority to these parents. Attendance is also not stressed, and it is important to have hands-on science and math material to "catch up" on their academics. Also we are isolated away from the school in portable classrooms. These are caring and deserving children that desperately need a good education so they may prosper in the future. Our school is in the inner city, and these children want to learn and be something in the future just like all children dream of.
I am requesting a complete "explore and discover centers:, slides for my microscopes, math games, 30 problem solving notebooks, and 30 math journals for my students. I have always thought that math journals and problem solving was the way to go when teaching children to understand math. Drawing and explaining what they have done is the main idea of these journals. Also, it would be easy for children that are missing school to catch up on their math. Hopefully these materials would inspire my students to enjoy science and math and want to continue in this field. The (4) Explore and Discover Centers will make it possible for pairs of students to work at their own pace when their math work is complete. The centers are exciting and motivating for students. I am also hoping for an increase in attendance as they are fun to work with for the students.
I believe that all children can learn if they have the opportunity.
Having the right materials in the classroom is a big step toward a successful school year. Most of our materials in the district are outdated and worn. Since I am in a portable classroom, there is no Internet or outside access to games or united streaming. We must make our own exciting time in the world of education. The children are deserving and will take care of the materials. They are awesome kids!
